Rath Yatra, Odisha

Rath Yatra, Odissa

It is one of the major festivals of Odissa as well as the country celebrated with great enthusiasm in Puri, Odissa. Also known as the Chariot festival, its major highlights are its huge and perfectly decorated chariots. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath, the festival is celebrated at the temple which is also one of the four major holy pilgrimages of the Hindus.

The sight of the chariot of Lord Jagannath which is around 45 feet high, comprising 18 wheels is a treat to the eyes. Devotees and tourists come here from far and wide to witness the celebrations. The procession is taken out on the streets wherein the Lord along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra are brought from the temple and then at the end of the five day festival they are taken back to the temple. As the procession is taken out the air gets filled with soothing sound of metal gongs and conch shells, tune of trumpets and chanting of holy men. It is a great experience to be a part of this festival.
